The Start of 2009 season saw very high rivers with some very Wintery weather with quite a bit of snow in places. Muckross Beat 1 on the Laune has seen a few nice fish caught in the 10 - 15lbs bracket. with four Springers caught that I know off. 3 from the river and 1 from the lake. though I am sure a few more have caught trolling on the lake. The levels on the Laune have now dropped quite low and most fish will be running straight through into the lake. Opening days on the River Blackwater & Lee saw very high water levels practically in the fields in some beats. There was one Springer lost on the Fly on opening day on the BallyHooly beat (Blackwater Lodge) on a fast sinking shooting head and large tube. There were several kelts caught and released. This shows that Salmon can still be caught in very high water levels if you are willing to use the right equipment and quite effectively at that. Once the water levels drop a bit more the Spring Salmon should slow down a bit giving us a better chance to find them in the pools.
