[With Good Spring Salmon Fishing on the Munster Blackwater over the last few weeks - particularly in the lower stretches there was an excellent run underway. The Summer water levels had encouraged the fish to hold in the pools. Fish were caught on both the fly and spinner and a couple on the spun prawn. All fresh fish in cracking condition. With water levels over the last having risen the fish that were down river will now have run up above Fermoy and beyond which should provide some sport once levels settle again. Having seen two very fresh fish below Ballyduff yesterday and the first Grilse of the Season caught above Fermoy on Saturday fish seem to be spread well out now and with more water on the way for this week , hopefully more fish should enter the system. Fishing on the Lee has been slow owing to very low water levels up till last week, with reports of just a few fish of the middle reaches. However with high water levels over the last few days, which should continue now for the foreseeable future, Salmon should be arriving in higher numbers leading to good fishing around the Inniscarra beats. Mid April to Mid May is normally an excellent time for large Spring fish on the Lee when high water levels prevail as they seem to be now. The Laune has also had very low water levels until recently though should be on the rise now after al the recent rain. Sport on the River was poor with the fish shooting straight through to the lake where they were being caught regularly, with a very good run 10 days ago where 10 fish were caugt in a few days trolling on the lake. Hopefully water levels will rise sufficiently on the river to hold the fish back before entering the lake giving good sport on the upper beats, especially Muckross 1, where fish hold just where river and lake meet. I must apologize for the lack of reports so far this season, though I am currently studying and practicing hard for casting/instructors exam in October, so most of my cast is with a bit of wool rather than a fly at the moment. Though rest assured that any major runs or catches will be reported on immediately. Though for the moment your best bet is to keep an eye on the water levels, as soon as the start to settle , get out as the fish will be there !! Tight-lines, Kieran.
