"...Caught on a size 7 Highland Cascade..."

The Run of Spring Salmon is now starting to get underway on the Lee. Salmon are now being caught through-out the river from the Dam right down to the lower sections. While the run is not huge there are fish spread throughout, as I found out myself today. Fishing the Inniscarra beats this morning I connected with a fine sealiced Springer of about 8lbs on beat 3. Caught on a size 7 Highland Cascade, using a floating shooting head and a 15 foot type 3 sinktip. The fish gave a great account of itself and was promptly returned after a quick photo. Over the past few months I have started fishing with shooting heads and while I still prefer a more traditional speyline were space allows, when fishing in tight quarters as is the case 90% of the time on the Lee, the shooting heads are excellent, needing very little space to form D-loop. I am using the new AFS shooting head system from Rio which gives excellent presentation and effortless casting. It also incorporates a multi tip system which gives excellent versatility to cover various water conditions. Normally I would not promote any line but I think this line is excellent and every fly-fisher would benefit from having one in his arsenal. Tightlines, Kieran.
