"...The first few Grilse of the Season..."

Fishing over the past couple of weeks has been patchy at best. The Munster Blackwater seems to be giving the most consistent sport with fish being caught regulary. The Weirt pool on the River Lee is also fishing well with fish being caught on a daily basis though mainly on the shrimp. I have tried for the past three mornings to get one on the fly only to lose one on the first morning and only a couple of fish met between yesterday and today. The fly needs to be fished deep to begin with and I think a very early start is required. These fish are being constantly bombarded by shrimp and spinners(free fishing) which I think spooks them somewhat in this environment. Lough Leane in Killarney is also producing excellent numbers of Salmon to trolling methods. Unfortunetly levels on the Laune are very Low and the fish are running straight through into the lake, giving little time for sport. Possible some of the lower beats would be worth a cast particularly if one were to time ones fishing with the tide. One thing of note is that the have been a few diseased fish seen on both the River Lee and Munster Blackwater. Nothing too alarming, diseased fish are seen every season. Lets just hope that we don't see to many more. The first few Grilse of the Season have been caught on the Blackwater and Lee over the past week. This is normally a sign of a good season ahead when Grilse are caught this early. I would say that the Spring run in the south is pretty good at the moment, its just a little disjointed at the moment. For example nearly all the fish being caught on the Lee are in the lower section, on the Laune system its the Lake that 's producing the goods. We need a rise in water levels to even things out abit distribute the fish more evenly throughout the systems. Ones best bet for sport on the fly would be the Blackwater at the moment or possibly the weir pool on the Lee, though this is proving difficult as I mentioned earlier. I'll keep at though, see if I can get the right technique and let you know. Tightlines.
